Lab-grown diamonds: everything you need to know in 4 questions

By César & Manon, founders of Maison ODACE

When we present our jewelry house, ODACE, three questions come up systematically.
What is a lab-grown diamond? How is it created? Is it really different from a natural diamond?

Here is everything you need to understand to choose with complete confidence.

What is a lab-grown diamond (or cultured diamond)?

It is, quite simply, a diamond.

A lab-grown diamond possesses exactly the same physical, chemical, and visual properties as a diamond extracted from a mine.
To the naked eye, as well as under a microscope, a gemologist cannot tell the difference.

The only distinction lies in its origin.
One comes from the earth; the other is created by humans in a laboratory.

How is a diamond cultivated in a laboratory?

To understand this, we must first look at the natural formation of a diamond.

In nature, diamonds form more than 150 km underground from pure carbon subjected to extreme temperatures and pressures.
This process leads to the crystallization of carbon into rough diamond.

These diamonds then rise to the surface during volcanic eruptions before being extracted by humans.

In the laboratory, we reproduce these natural conditions.

Carbon is subjected to extreme pressures and temperatures in an incubator.
Within a few weeks, a rough diamond forms, just as in nature.

It is then cut and polished to reveal all of its brilliance.

    Are all lab-grown diamonds identical?

    Contrary to popular belief, no.

A lab-grown diamond is not an imitation like cubic zirconia, rhinestones, or moissanite.
    It is a real diamond.

    Each stone is unique.
Like natural diamonds, cultured diamonds exhibit variations in color, clarity, and inclusions.

They are also certified by the same organizations (IGI or GIA) according to the 4Cs criteria.

Why choose a lab-grown diamond today?

The cultured diamond is part of a profound evolution in jewelry.

Without mining, it significantly reduces the environmental and social impact associated with the diamond industry.

It also offers complete traceability, from the laboratory to the final piece of jewelry.

At ODACE, we have chosen to work exclusively with lab-grown diamonds to offer jewelry that is more responsible and in tune with the times.

How to choose your ring with a cultured diamond

Choosing a diamond remains, above all, a matter of emotion and taste.

We guide each client in creating unique pieces, particularly for engagement rings, taking their desires and history into account.
