Why seeing a diamond in person changes everything before choosing an engagement ring
What you see on jewelry websites does not always reflect reality.
Last week, a client came to the boutique to choose an engagement ring.
Before coming to see us, he had started his search online, then visited several stores in Paris.
There, he had discovered diamonds of standard market quality: G color and VS clarity, sometimes H-SI.
On paper, everything seemed consistent.
And yet… he was disappointed.
What he had seen did not match what he had observed on online shops: diamonds that were less white, less luminous, and less brilliant than he had imagined.
Why online jewelry photos can be misleading
And that is normal.
The 4Cs are essential for evaluating a diamond: carat, color, clarity, and cut.
But for someone who is not in the industry, these quality criteria remain very abstract.
Between a G color and a D color, between a VS clarity and a VVS clarity, the difference can seem very theoretical on a product sheet.
And between optimized photos, lighting effects, and the retouching used to showcase a piece, it becomes almost impossible to perceive the true differences in quality from a distance.
Seeing a diamond in person changes the perception of its quality
At the ODACE boutique, when we showed him an exceptionally high-quality diamond—D color and VVS clarity—for the first time, he paused.
Then he said to us:
"Ah, yes… I understand."
We hear this phrase often.
Many of our clients tell us this within the first few seconds: they are struck by the brilliance of our diamonds.
Some even confide that they had never seen anything like it before.
D color, VVS clarity: what it really changes
At ODACE, we have chosen to work with high-quality diamonds: D color and VVS clarity.
D color corresponds to the highest level of whiteness on the diamond grading scale.
VVS clarity designates a stone whose inclusions are extremely difficult to observe, even under magnification.
These criteria may seem technical. However, when you compare diamonds in person, they become much more concrete.
The stone appears whiter, more luminous, and more transparent. It catches the light better. It immediately gives an impression of sharpness and brilliance.
Lab-grown diamonds provide access to superior quality
If we can offer this level of quality, it is also because we have chosen the lab-grown diamond.
A lab-grown diamond possesses the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as a diamond extracted from the earth.
The difference lies in its origin: it is created in a laboratory, in a controlled environment.
This choice provides access to very high-quality diamonds, often larger, whiter, or purer for the same budget.
For an engagement ring, that can make a real difference.
Before choosing an engagement ring, take the time to compare
What we always recommend: before choosing a piece of jewelry you will wear for the rest of your life, take the time to see it in person, compare it, and feel it.
Look at the diamond under several types of lighting. Compare several shapes. Observe the difference between a round, oval, cushion, or pear-shaped diamond. Try on several settings.
An engagement ring is not chosen just from a photo, nor solely from a technical data sheet.
It is also chosen in that very special moment when you understand, upon seeing it, why it is the one.
And if that is not possible, prioritize certified stones with high quality criteria that are clearly indicated.
