Why is the diamond associated with engagement?

Pourquoi le diamant est-il associé aux fiançailles ?

Why is the diamond associated with engagement?

By Manon & César, founders of Maison ODACE

It is a question we asked ourselves for a long time.

Why, among all precious stones, has the diamond established itself as the symbol of engagement?

Why is it almost always the one chosen to accompany a marriage proposal?

A tradition dating back to the 15th century

The story goes back to the 15th century.

In 1477, Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy what is considered the first diamond-set engagement ring.

Not a sapphire. Not an emerald. A diamond.

Even then, this stone was fascinating for its rarity and exceptional resistance.

The diamond, a symbol of lasting love

The diamond is the hardest stone in the world.

Nothing scratches it. Nothing alters it.

And that is precisely what it symbolizes: a solid love capable of withstanding the test of time.

To offer a diamond is to say:

"What we are building is meant to last."

    A symbol reinforced by time

In the 20th century, this symbolism became deeply anchored in the public consciousness.

The famous slogan "A diamond is forever" helped permanently associate the diamond with romantic commitment.

Since then, it has become the obvious choice for engagement rings.

A tradition that is evolving today

    Today, this tradition continues.

    But it is evolving.

At ODACE, we have chosen to work exclusively with lab-grown diamonds.

They possess the same properties as diamonds extracted from the earth, while offering complete traceability and reduced impact.

A way to extend the symbolism of the diamond, while adding contemporary values.

    A symbol beyond the stone

A diamond is not just a precious stone.

    It is a symbol.

    A symbol of a promise.

And this promise takes on even more meaning when it is part of choices one can be proud of.

To discover our engagement rings adorned with lab-grown diamonds or to imagine your own creation, we welcome you for an appointment at our boutique in Paris or via video call.
